Nice and warm, and no wind.

I was therefore making plans to attend the reenactment of the Battle of the Hook, which was to take place on Octboer 18 and 19 at Warner Hall Plantation in Gloucester. 1,500 reenactors would take part.

Wa-ell, come October 18 and the temperature had dropped precipitously and the wind had picked up preciptiously and it was just too unpleasant of a day to spend walking around outside watching people reenact a battle.

And today, Sunday October 19, is just as bad.

So, I'm sorry, I'm staying indoors and watching football.

It's a pity though... because this is doubtless the kind of weather that the soldiers in the Revolutionary war fought through at this time of year, and of course the Civil War soldiers... fighting and dying and now, over 150 years later, we Americans can sit in comfort of a Sunday and watch football...

Yorktown: The 1st allied siege line

If you're visiting Yorktown battlefield, coming from York County or Hampton or Newport News (rather than coming south from Richmond) - there are a couple of ways to get to the Yorktown battlefield.

I always drive down George Washington Highway (Highway 17), and turn off on __________. If you continue on you'll come to another exit that leads straight to the Visitor's Center.

I take the _________ exit. You drive along, pass a school, pass Surrender Road, and keep on going. Soon, on your right, you will see a placard standing alone in a field (the place I was talking about in the video in the first entry of this blog) which identifies the spot as the location of the First Allied Siege Line. All the earthworks here, and the cannon, are reconstructions or replicas.

On the right, there are two cannon that are representative of the French Battery.

I'll talk about these more in a future entry.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KXBZvbU0LoI/R-md87eTDAI/AAAAAAAAAME/_1JZi7QZ9Ik/s400/1stAlliedLine.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181846516348947458" />
The first Allied Siege Line

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KXBZvbU0LoI/R-meXreTDDI/AAAAAAAAAMc/EvS_-W1Ld4U/s400/GrandFrench2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181846975910448178" />
Mortars

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KXBZvbU0LoI/R-meKLeTDCI/AAAAAAAAAMU/ySwhk2FEnhs/s400/FrenchBattery5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181846743982214178" />
The Grand French Battery

A Youtube video of Yorktown Battlefield

[Edited 3/25/08: I had intended to do some video articles of Yorktown last year, but the scene below is as far as I got.
